Melbourne’s version will be a little different, but the spirit is coming with the game.
The NFL Stadium Campus in Yarra Park opens from 7am, more than three hours before kick-off, with food and drink, merchandise, entertainment, sponsor activations and fan activities surrounding the MCG.
Rather than simply heading straight for a seat, fans have every reason to arrive early, grab some breakfast, meet up with mates and soak up an atmosphere Melbourne has never experienced before.
It might not be a row of pickup trucks and portable grills in an American stadium car park, but for one morning at least, Yarra Park is going to have a distinctly NFL flavour.
Melbourne Gets the Tailgate Treatment
The celebrations aren’t confined to the MCG precinct.
The NFL Kickoff Festival at Melbourne Park runs across the game period, bringing more of the American football experience to the city with interactive activities, food, entertainment and fan experiences.
There’s even a dedicated American-style tailgate experience among the festival activations.
The Rams have also brought their own festivities to Melbourne, including a Riverwalk fan zone at Crown, as supporters of both teams descend on the city.
All of this helps turn the match into something Melbourne does particularly well: an event that spills beyond the stadium and becomes part of the city.
Rams v 49ers Is the Real Deal
This isn’t an exhibition match.
The Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers are NFC West rivals and Friday’s match counts towards the 2026 NFL regular season.
That makes the Melbourne game historic before a ball is even snapped. Australia has hosted American football before, but never an NFL regular season game for competition points.
And the venue couldn’t be more Melbourne.
The MCG has hosted Olympic Games, AFL Grand Finals, Boxing Day Tests, international football and some of the biggest sporting crowds Australia has seen. Now the unmistakable markings of an American football field will temporarily take over the famous ground.
For Australian NFL supporters who have spent years watching games from thousands of kilometres away — often at some fairly unfriendly hours — seeing two NFL teams play a genuine regular season game at the ‘G is something entirely new.

A 10.35am Friday kick-off isn’t exactly conventional.

Instead of waiting until evening for the main event, Melbourne’s NFL day starts with breakfast and team jerseys and can continue well into Friday night.
The Stadium Campus opens at 7am, the Rams and 49ers kick off at 10.35am and, after the final whistle, the Official NFL Kickoff Festival Post-Game Party keeps the celebrations going at nearby Melbourne Park.
In other words, there is plenty of scope to turn an NFL match into an entire day out.
And that’s exactly what a Big Day should be.

You don’t necessarily need a ticket to the game to embrace the idea.
American-style tailgating is really about the ritual surrounding the sport: gathering the crew, wearing the colours, eating appropriately excessive food and making the occasion bigger than the result.
